They were on to their third episode of Outlander by the time Liam’s phone rang. Half empty pizza boxes and a couple of empty beer bottles littered the table, and Liam had to search for a second to find it.

“Hello?” He sat forward in his seat and Ben immediately knew it was Jason on the other end. “How did it go? Oh hang on, let me put you on speaker.” Setting the phone on the table, he pressed a couple of buttons and Jason’s tinny voice filled the living room.

“You ready?”

Ben shot Liam a grateful smile.

“Yep, go ahead.”

“Okay, he’s out of surgery.” So it was a he. “And seems to be doing fine.”

Both Ben and Liam breathed a sigh of relief. “What about his leg?” Liam asked.

Jason let out a deep breath, and Ben knew what was coming. “We couldn’t save it.”

“Shit.” Ben’s heart sank. The poor little thing.

“Look.” Jason paused and Ben imagined him running a hand through his hair. “This course of action was far better for him in the long run. He’ll recover much quicker, and honestly, cats manage fine on three legs. And I don’t mean to sound callous, but he wasn’t chipped, so this is also the cheapest option by far. If we find the owner they might not have insurance, and if we can’t find them then the vets and the RSPCA will have to foot the bill.”

Ben tried not to be pissed off with that. Rationally he knew that what Jason was saying was all true. “So he’s going to be all right then?”

“Yep. He’s young—only about a year old I’d say—and appears to be in good health. He should be up and moving around by morning.”

Ben perked up at that. “Really?”

Soft laughter sounded on the other end. “Yes. Animals are amazingly resilient. We’ll keep an eye on him for the next few days, make sure the wound is healing nicely, but I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t make a full recovery.”

Sitting forward, Ben tapped the edge of the coffee table. “What happens if no one comes forward for him?”

“Then we’ll hopefully hand him over to the RSPCA shelter for re-homing.” Noise in the background sounded like someone asking Jason a question, then they heard a muffled response. “Look, I have to go. If you want, you can pop in and see him tomorrow?”

Liam glanced at Ben, eyebrow raised. Ben nodded. “Yeah, okay. I’m at work, but Ben will come down in the…?”

“Morning,” Ben added. “About ten-ish, if that’s okay?”

“Yeah, that’s fine. Just tell Jenny why you’re here, and she’ll ask one of the nurses to take you back to see him.”

Ben wanted to ask if Jason would be there but managed to hold his tongue. “Thanks.”

“You did a good thing bringing him in. I’m sure someone out there is going to be very happy he’s all right.”

Ben hoped so.

Jason hung up and the room fell quiet. Liam un-paused the TV and settled back on the sofa again, the mood a lot more relaxed than it had been earlier.
